Computer-Assisted Orthopedic Surgery (C.A.O.S.)

Kambiz Behzadi, M.D.

One of the most advanced techniques today, and most likely the next generation in surgical technology for joint replacements is Computer Assisted Orthopedic Surgery (C.A.O.S).

Utilizing specialized high power digital imaging tools and information-processing systems, orthopedic surgeons can now “map” out a joint during surgery, giving a clear 3 dimensional image which is projected to a computer screen. It works similar to a GPS (global positioning system) which are found in vehicles today used to map and locate certain geographical points. This innovative technique provides a degree of accuracy which is not typically possible with the “naked eye” or other conventional instrumentation.

C.A.O.S. allows the surgeon to more accurately position and align a joint replacement, which translates to a longer life for the artificial joint, more rapid recovery and ultimately a better outcome for the patient. The more precise the joint is aligned, th less potential wear and tear to joint surfaces of the new implant device.

Modern day computers are used to aid the surgeon in decision making during the process of total joint replacement surgery. The C.A.O.S System is a computer workstation consisting of a screen, computer software, a positioning/tracking system and surgical instrumentation. The positioning and tracking system is composed of small refl ective spheres that are tracked by an optical camera in order to register the relative location of bony structures and surgical instruments. During the course of the surgical procedure, the positioning and tracking system gathers and stores all the information regarding a specifi c body structure, the motion and alignment of the patient’s normal anatomy and optimal joint alignment. With this data, the system then
develops the framework which gives your surgeon information needed to optimally position and align your joint replacement.

Tri-Valley Orthopedic Specialists offers this procedure to appropriate patients after extensive evaluation and diagnostic studies. Kambiz Behzadi, M.D., a Sports Medicine Specialist, who is specially trained in Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques and C.A.O.S., is currently working with the Medtronic Navigation System for total knee replacement.
