An innovative form of minimally invasive surgery, the physicians’ at Tri-Valley Orthopedic Specialists have utilized arthroscopic surgical techniques for over 25 years. Arthroscopy refers to surgery performed using specially designed miniature cameras and lens as well as fiber-optic lighting, placed into joint through very small incisions (called portals). This technique is used to both diagnose and treat musculoskeletal injuries throughout the body, from the shoulder to the ankle. The surgeon can visualize and repair these injured structures (including cartilage, tendon and ligament tears), while viewing the entire procedure on high-definition television monitors in the operating room. Patients are most often allowed to return home the same day as surgery. The use of arthroscopy decreases the risk of complications such as pain, bleeding or nerve injury and usually improves surgical recovery time. This allows patients to return to their normal activities more quickly than with traditional “open surgery”, often with less pain and quicker return of function.

Arthroscopy is used in the diagnosis and treatment several Orthopedic conditions including:

  • Inflammation: Synovitis (or inflammation) of the lining of the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, or ankle
  • Acute or chronic injury: Injuries to the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee or ankle joint. This includes cartilage, ligament or tendon tears, carpal tunnel syndrome, and much more.
  • Cartilage repair, regeneration and transplantation
  • Ligament repair or reconstruction in all major joints
  • Arthroscopic-assisted fixation of trauma, fractures or dislocation
  • Tissue removal: This includes removal of unstable cartilage flaps, scar tissue or loose bodies that can cause pain and dysfunction

Several of our physicians are fellowship and sub-specialty trained in arthroscopy and sports medicine and are leaders in the field, teaching at national courses and authoring peer-reviewed literature on the subject. Using these innovative techniques, along with a comprehensive post-operative rehabilitation plan, the physicians at Tri-Valley Orthopedic Specialists are dedicated to minimizing pain, improving recovery and maximizing function for each of our patients.
